R320 suddendly died at stop sign

Our R320 suddendly died when we stopped and started to procede. restarted with check engine light on, ran at very low rpm and lots of shaking. died again in about 10 seconds. restarted with same results. rolled the car back and to the side of the road (5 minutes at the most). restsrted and seemed to run ok. drove home. mileage dropped from 20+ to 19. Took it to local dealer. they cannot find the problem. code indicated fuel problem. opened TAC ticket but they won't let local dealer change out any parts. they have had the car since monday AM, they tell me it is running fine. Any ideas?? or has this happended to anyone else.

Well of course it is a fuel problem, diesels have no spark. I suspect the dealer meant it had a fuel delivery problem, which would most likely mean a clogged fuel filter or bad pump.

If intermittent, I would suspect the pump. Maybe they want you to drive until it fails and they can be sure.

Got the car back. they didn't change out any parts. fuel filter was changed 2 weeks ago. the drove it a lot as they fueled it up and charged me $75.00.
Here is a synopsis of the invoice:
ran 541011 & 541012 short tests, perform 139 WM08, ran 075701 fuel pump delivery 139 wm08
28411 NO PROBLEM FOUND. connected SDS and ran short test found code 2017-001 rail pressure monitoring via volume control valve. rail pressure to low. SDS advised to replace quanity control valve. tested amperage of low pressure tank fuel pump.running between 7 and 9.5 amps. spec is 9-14 amp. opended TAC case. advised to continue monitoring fuel pump. all ok at this time.
just got back fro driving it 45 miles, ran ok. computer showed average of 25.9 MPG.

charge

if car is under warranty, why did you get charged (except maybe for gas?). also I would love to get your kind of gas mileage, I am averaging just below 20 mpg per tank (mostly city driving).

oh and what is "TAC"?

the car is under warranty and the charge was for the fuel. i figure they drove it a 100+ miles. We changed out the stock air filters for K & N filters. This is a DIY only for serious amatuers. TAC stands for Technical Assistance Center. I am a little P. O. with Mercedes for not changing out the fuel pump. to my eyes it is out of specification. also not to crazy about driving a vehicle that suddenly quits and they can't find anything wrong. trying to wrestle the steering with no power is really hard on a car that size.

Hi All:
My car died at a stop light intermitantly and after restart tries it started and drove fine. 2004 Benz E320. May the car have a problem later? Like JWRATTS problem?
