$500 for latch on rear hatch

The rear hatch\door on my wife's 2007 R350 stopped working this weekend. The motor will lift and lower the door but it doesn't latch shut at the bottom. Closing it manually didn't work either. She took it into the dealer and was just quoted $500 for the new latch. Yikes!

Thanks U689

Thanks man. Looks like I got a deal on the part. They charged me $320 USD for the part and $200 for the labor. MBPartsworld lists that part as costing $720.

U689, Isn't part 190 for opening the door? Original poster said his door opens and closes but just doesn't latch. I'm having this problem myself (for auto opens and closes, but just doesn't latch) and am thinking its #10 on your image (the liftgate lock/latch). The image you have though looks different than the ones used for our model years (I have an 08). I am not sure if 10 is right, but I think its #20 on the MB OEM diagram for our model years or part# 164 740 07 35. I'm not 100% sure. I have all the trim off my door (took me about 40 minutes being very careful, did not break any clips at all) and may be reaplcing it here soon. Looks real easy. I'll create a new thread if I go that route.

All, I was right, the item indicated in U689's post is not correct for a latching/locking problem (seems it would be what you are looking for if the door itself is not lifting or closing on its own). I also beleive his image may be for a different model year as well.
