Loose Rear View Mirror - Inside the $705 Mirror

I've been using this forum for years and now it's time to contribute. The ball-joint of my interior rear view mirror on my 2007 R320 has been loose since late last year and I ran out of options to stiffen it. So, I broke down and replaced it with a used one from ebay. I then tore apart the old one without any regard for the mirror (and, frankly, a bit of aggression towards it), and decided I'd share the pix. Yeah, I know, it's just a mirror (is that all I have to offer?), but I thought what the hell/ it's a SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLAR MIRROR and I put together the attached PDF - maybe it'll help someone.

Pretty sophisticated mirror. Almost worth the $700 quoted. (-:
Thanks for the info. It'll keep me from moving it as much as I do.

Thanks for the photos. I have the same problem and glad it's covered under the factory warranty.

Remove rear view mirror 2007 r350

Anyone know how to take the old one off. I have the new one but removing the old one is confusing. I thought it would slide out or be on a latch but it’s just fastened right to the windshield. Almost looks glued to it.

I just purchased a used 08 ML320 CDI with a loose similar looking mirror. Wonder if there is any kind of "stickum" or something similar that could be carefully injected into the ball to stiffen things up without sticking it solid? Looking for a solution that doesn't require removing the whole mirror from the windscreen.

Took the mirror apart, used a gear clamp around the ball, seems to be working well for the past few months.
