Considering a used W251...
I have been a lurker here for a long time and have used the forums for my 2000 S500. I finally decided to make my own account here.

I am considering buying a used R-Class and I wanted to know a little bit about the issues. I am aware of the problems with the Airmatic suspensions but aside from that what are some other issues that these cars have? What are some good aftermarket warranties? Please link me to any forums that may help!
I also am stuck between the 350 and 500 and do not know which route to go. If anyone has any experiences with these W251s then please help me make the right decision!
I am looking to spend in the neighborhood of $15k and I am not entirely sure if i should spring or a R, ML, or GL. If you guys feel that I will not be able to purchase on of these cars in good condition, please let me know! Thank you!
Sam.
The lower the miles the better, get an extended warranty. You'll save lots of $ in the long run, parts and labor can be expensive.
I just finished my research and bought a R500.
It was advertised by a private seller in AZ. He had the back seats down and I didn't see the missing headrests in the third row until I got home. I will make a list of items to check before buying next time.
It was still a great deal on an outstanding performance car. I drove the R350 and can't find a R500 nearby to test drive. Found a 28K 2007 R500 at CarMax and paid to ship it to Dallas 2 weeks ago. It must stop in every CarMax from CA. It still hasn't arrived, thank goodness. Found the 06 with 48,000 miles for 15,500. CarMax wants 21K for its car.
If you are interested, the car is not available for sale until it arrives in Dallas and I tell them decision. It a great car but seems pricey and they would negotiate the price.
I love my R500 and purchase the best warranty I could find $3600.
A whole shopping experience to get a warranty I could trust.
Forums recommend Exclusionary Warranties and low mileage is key. Stay under 50K and you can find a warranty that should protect your wallet. I still know it will cost in maintenance and upkeep.
WORTH THE COST OF DOING BUSINESS.
Good Luck
Kevin
