You can connect it to any bare metal bolt in the engine bay or to the engine itself. I usually use one of the bolts on the cross member.
That bolt in the bottom left hand corner of your pic should do fine.
My R320 doesn't have a - post either, but my E320 does.

My 08 has one. it is on the side of the fender. (Bottom picture). It also shows on the owner manual.
It is a hex head bolt. Trust me because I connected the negative (-) to my LED light there.

And I actually LOVE the design.... except when you have to change the battery...
It is actually designed to stop, as you put it, "retarded" people from shorting out or crossing cables on the battery....
The post as shown is an unnecessary bonus since Marc is totally correct.... for negative you can use any good metal point on the engine... that is actually the preferred method when you have the battery under the hood as well.....
