Some sort of oil leak
Hi,
I noticed that our R350 is starting to leak oil. I'm not sure if it is engine oil or transmission oil though. Below are some pictures. I read that the ML350 has a cam cap issue that leaks a small amount of oil after a while which is an easy fix. Could this be the issue? The car has 58k miles on it. It drips about a quarter of oil per day.
Thanks

A quarter sized drip onto the ground a day you mean? ...
i had something similar recently... maybe less... lost (according to the dashboard oil level checker) that i should add 1.5 quarts to fill back up... thats over 4k miles and about 6 months...
Turns out that it was my valve cover breather ... possibly the valve cover gasket ... did both at just under $500... no more leaks.
The other culprit (though apparently less likely) is the main seal..
Personally i cannot tell from the photos you provided sorry perhaps another can
Best of luck with it though !

Update
Just an update to help anyone who may also be facing this issue, I found out that a common source of the leak is :
1) Camshaft cap covers (three of them).
2) PCV valve O-rings wear causing a leak.
I took a look and saw that there was no leak from two of the camshaft caps. One of them had a very small leak. A bigger leak was from the PCV valve, though didnt seem as it was enough to create the large drips in my pictures. Nevertheless, it was still a leak. I replaced the cam caps and PCV valve (bought them off ebay). I'll see if it still leaks over the next few weeks and post an update.

Total was about 70 bucks shipped from ebay.
Install took about 1 hour and was pretty simple. If you've replaced your air filter, its pretty much the same procedure. There are also some videos on youtube.

Yes, the residue looks old. You can clean it thoroughly with a paper towel, then check in one month if the leak returns.
