Took off the intake to change the air filters, the EGR hose was pretty oily and the turbo intake had this small pool of oil in it. Is this normal/acceptable?

yes thats normal but you can change the 2 orange rubber parts, will reduce the amount of oil leaking to the engine... keep it clean.
there is wiring under there that will become a mess if there is too much oil dripping

how long have you had it?

how is your air intake belowes? The plastic that goes around that orange turbo gasket? It tends to get very hot and brittle. I got a replacement at a used parts. Same on all of these engines Mine came from an ML.

Its in surprisingly good shape.

You should see what the air filters looked like that I replaced. I am not sure if they were the originals, but they were the dirtiest I have ever seen in my life. They hadnt been changed in a long time. The car noticeably performs better now because of it.

Sadly that is not unusual as changing the air filters on the turbo is a PITA if you don't have practice. Luckily they go like 40K miles if I recall from my CDI.
I think many DIYers may not change them, nor if you are far from the dealer or a good indy shop an they may be neglected. Nobody wants to pay $100 labour to change air filters.
