2011 mercedes R350 bluetec
Hi new user pls be patient

My r350 diesel, 2011, seems to make a rattle from engine at startup. This noise is sometimes louder than others and I'm pretty sure it's a timing chain rattle. I purchased this vehicle 1.7 years ago and it has been making this noise ever since. The only difference is that now it seems to last longer. If I turn it off immediately when I realize the noise will keep going instead of quieting g down, and restart it right away too, it starts with no noise at all. At first I thought it was lack of oil on the top end at startup but I am leaning towards timing chain now. Pls, if anyone has any idea of how this can fail, and or, if it's safe to drive.

It sounds like you're on the right track, from what I recall 2010-2011 are the problematic years for the timing chain stretch issue.
If you are mechanically inclined, patient, careful and willing to buy the tools you might not have it can be a DIY.

Personally, I would find a nearby independent tech to have a look.
Here are links for parts from a vendor I've used and trust:

https://www.idparts.com/timing-chain...42-p-6755.html (Kit)
https://www.idparts.com/sprinter-mer...aa-p-7578.html (Just the chain).

You would probably want to get the whole kit, as most of the cost is the chain.
Hope this helps!
