Facelift engine options?
Hi team,
Newb here, looking into these big wagons for hauling a small family. We mostly drive for 1200mile road trips to see our family a few states over.
I'm looking at '11 and '12 R's and have found a local seller who has a '12 Blue Efficiency with 100K. any reason I would favor this over an '11 with less miles?
Is there a breakdown somewhere on the engine options that came in these cars?
(I'm assuming facelift means 2011 or greater?)
EDIT: I should add that I'm seeking a gas-fired model.

Anyway, I am in the same boat as you, since I am looking to get back into a R-Class for a family trip mobile.
Good Luck!

There were no significant changes between the 2011 and 2012 - pretty much identical cars with possible exception of how MB packaged options.

BTW, All kinds of horror $tories on the Merc diesel's on MBW. Since I'm not a gambler, went with the gas version so I could spend my extra money on something else...

MBWorld Fanatic!
I had my EGR blow up with along with something related to my exhaust which overall wasn't to expensive. Then my manifold needed to get replaced along with my sunroof. I was looking at 8k or repairs just for that. But the car was such a pleasure to drive. If it is just for road trips, I would lean towards the Diesel. It would perform great on the highways and high speed. I believe at that year you basically have the 6 cylinder gas vs diesel engine. You can find plenty of folks talk about the upkeep on the OM642 Diesel engine and my go with the gas engine. You may find a v8 R550 though I believe those are extremely rare.
Anyway, I am in the same boat as you, since I am looking to get back into a R-Class for a family trip mobile.
Good Luck!

Wasn't this a Canada only special edition?

Not sure about Canada only on the R550 but it definitely wasn't released in the states. I think it was MY 2008 only. But then I also heard they were sold up in Canada in 2013. There are one or two guys here on the forum who are R550 owners. Maybe they will jump in.
I don't think the motor was the infamous m113 V8 either. I seem to remember reading somewhere it's a m273, sharing similar engineering as the 2006-2011 R's m272 6 cyl (without the balance shaft). Same variable length intake layout, and 4 valves per cylinder, just with 2 extra cylinders added.

Correct the '12 had blue efficiency. you will get better gas mileage. But in the end it may be a wash. how much milleage difference?
i have a fully loaded '11 gas and am very pleased with it. Changed the alternator and rear air bags.
if there is lots of salt on the roads in winter where you are the blind spot sensors will go... expensive to replace. but check for hidden warranties with your dealer.

I have a 13 gas. R-class was for sales in Canada till 2013. The engineer been great, had mileage isn't too bad considering the weight and size. My forms is a service manager at a local MB dealer. He told her to buy had model as diesel will have more problem over all.
