2010 R350 Bluetech-Turbo Replacement

Has anyone replaced a turbo in an R-class? It looks harder to access than the ML/GLs. Any advice would be appreciated, I am thinking about doing this myself since my indy wanted 4600 to do it!

I haven't done this, but have done some other items shoehorned into the compartment...

You'll be coming at this from above, then below, then above again (, and perhaps repeating..!).
If you have the hand tools (multiple extensions to reach the manifold-to-Y-pipe connections, from below as an example)
, and patience to back up and retry... Last things you want here are broken fasteners coming out and loose or broken fasteners in assembly.
Else you're running to parts store or doing it over when leaks show up.

Yes, you can do this. For myself I would figure 3x whatever book hours I was quoted, since I don't have a lift.
Ramps might not get you enough height, I built bunks just for this car.
(I wouldn't trust jack stands, it's just too heavy)

Turbo pedestal gasket has holes for both oil and water, since turbo is water-cooled ball bearing unit. The older CDI motors aren't.
I'm curious what was parts vs. labor/hours ..?

Forgive me, please:
- I haven't done this job
- Other turbo I mentioned is Not on your car, was on the S350 Bluetec and I think some C-series cars. I can't say for sure if these models ever made it to U.S. even.
- Re-reading my previous, it sounds like I might be talking you out of it. I would do it myself too.

Having said all this, you want to absolutely sure the turbo indeed needs replacement - from beating up this and other forum sites it seems that misdiagnosis is very common.
Check the boost hoses for cracks and leaking connection seals, any other boost control / emission control / engine management issues.
There are numerous fail-safes on Mercedes that can de-power or disable seemingly unrelated systems.
The DPF pressure-differential sensor will cut boost requested, for example.

Good luck!

Well turbo replaced, drove a thousand miles over the week and all was good until last night. I think my troubles are now DPF related. I am starting a new thread for today's problems lol.

Does scan tool indicate the sensor?
I have ICarly and the FoxConn unit, but I think the DPF pressure-differential sensor will show even on Torque Lite Bluetooth app.

I had one fail last year and replaced it - they can be had for reasonable if you're willing to hunt.
The Bosch number is the same for most OM642 applications, I think I paid $15-20 for the part.

Which sensor? The backpressure sensor?

Here's one vendor showing the bosch number as well as the MB number:

Price varies wildly on this part... seems to be a common failure - and there are many, many vehicles out there using it.

It's tucked away above and to the rear of the DPF
, mounted passenger side of tunnel to a bracket
, over cross member rear of the transmission.

Still, the scan code for it is pretty specific. And there are other pressure sensors, so you'd want to be sure first...
(Or, not!)
