Oil Filter Leak Caused Low Oil...
In our rush to get a new filter in our R350 during a storm, the oil ring on the filter was not installed correctly. As a result, we lost a lot of oil. We filled it back up and it ran well for 500 miles, and still runs well.
The issue is oil starvation symptoms on startup now. It chatters pretty good for a few seconds from the passenger side of the motor.
In researching this, I see a lot of posts about timing chain tensioners, an O-ring on the oil pump, and possibly lifters.
Questions:
1) Should the oil filter be dry after it sits, or should it store oil and then release it on startup? Could this be the problem?
2) Does the chain tensioner have a check valve to stop the flow of oil (drain from the oil filter)? I know it is spring loaded, and not totally sure of the oil pathway and how this may cause oil to drain from the top end.
3) If the hydraulic lifters were damaged, would this cause them to not hold oil? If they are scored or damaged, could this create the chatter we are hearing?
Car has 120,000 miles on it, and it may be that the timing chain was already due to be changed and our filter leak may have accelerated this?
Anyway, I have ordered a new chin tensioner and O-ring for the oil pump for now. Just looking for some Benz knowledge.
Many thanks!
Ty
