key / fob programming
Hi. New forum user (but not a new MB owner).
I Just purchased a 2010 R350 that came with only 1 key/fob. I've read conflicting information about obtaining a spare key.
Has anyone been able to purchase a replacement key from somewhere other than a MB dealer and been able to get it programmed to their car?
Thanks in advance.
John

It wouldn’t be much of a security system if anyone could create a key.
you need to go to Mercedes dealer with evidence you actually own the car and when you do they will order a key for you. There is a finite number of times this can be done.

If anyone wants the contact information for the Fl business, just let me know and I will be happy to provide that.
Oh, and of course, the cost for a spare keyfob with programming was only $185, LESS THAN HALF of the cost at the MB stealership.

Ok, I finally got the correct information on MB key fob programming. The MB stealership is NOT the only place to get keys for MB cars. Any locksmith with the proper programmer is able to cut and program a key fob for ANY MB car or SUV. Also, there's a locksmith in Florida that will provide this service and they don't even need to have the vehicle present. You just send them the ignition module from you car (very easy to remove/replace from your car) and they will program a new remote to your car and send it back to you. The keyfob has to be programmed to the ignition switch ONLY, the keyfob is NOT programmed to the car's computer as others have stated here.

My 2011 R-350 also came with only 1 key fob. I called around to several MB dealerships in the area to get estimates on replacement...it's been a couple years but I seem to recall them quoting in the high $200s at the low-end to ~$450 at the high-end for a replacement (not sure why there would be that much variation between dealerships, but there was). Twist to start is cheaper, if you have keyless/push to start the price goes up from there. Never ended up doing it, and have just been scrupulous about keeping tabs on the 1 key.
