leather repair/rejuvenation

Any ideas (besides shoe polish) as to how to masquerade some small areas where leather has worn away?

Use Leatherique.
I ordered it from the USA. It's not the cheapest but it works. My leather was going like carboard in my car.... from years of sitting in the sun from the previous owner. Now it's much softer and has a nice matt finish.
Do a search. It's an amazing product. They also sell the dyes for the areas that are worn away. Though I never tried that.
