When did they change the letters?
If I see a CL on the back of one of these cars..is it really a CL? or did the owner just switch letters. I thought they were all S class coupes and had an S on the trunk?

I believe it was changed in either 97 or 98. It's just some marketing's game. Same body style until 2001.

1998 cl 600
The 140 coupes and the sedans were both called "S" until 1998 when the coupes got the "CL" designation.

You will find that some folks have updated their older coupes by adding the "CL" badge.
