2 questions about wheels for my 2017 S550 Coupe

2 Attachment(s)
I went to local tire shop and the sales guy told me my options are limited when picking a 22" wheel and trying to keep my budget around $3000. He said most of those wheels will be made in China and are cheap.

He then tried telling me his in house brand which goes for $5000+ is a much better option and almost the only option unless I spend more.

Is this a case of him pushing the in house wheels for more profit or is he telling the truth?

I've found wheels on carid.com and its under $3,000 (Giovanna Bogota or Haleb) tires included.

Also carid.com basically only gives one width option for the wheels and one tire option for the tires. Is this ok? Or do adjustments need to be made?

Thanks

Are you certain you want 22"s ? The ride will deteriorate and you'll be much more likely to get a bent wheel if you hit a pothole or something like that. If you proceed keep the tires at least at 40 psi cold.

Personally, I would stick with 20" wheels and maybe install a lowering module to drop the stance slightly. AMG wheels are very good and keep everything OEM, or look into high quality aftermarket offerings from HRE, adv.1, etc. Definitely avoid the cheap imported wheels!

You could consider 21" as a compromise but tire options will be more limited.

I thought about that but I'd like to go at least 2" more than what I already have on there to help the appearance.

Congrats on your new car. I agree w/HB. The AMG 20"s look darn good on mine.

Since yours is a '17 I'd appreciate if you chime in on my thread: https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-c...ml#post7179187

Thanks

I personally don't see any issues with running a 22" wheel on this car UNLESS it's a poor quality wheel. Obviously the problem there is that because the tires are so skinny any imperfection or pothole you hit is going to be absorbed more by the wheel than the tire in this case, causing it to bend or fail. Stick with a high quality trusted option!

Here's some shots of a S550 Coupe on our HRE P103 Wheels in Brushed Clear:

It is true that the wheels you will find around $3,000 in 22" for an S-Class will not be of any reasonable quality. What is the name of the in-house brand? I would just do my homework and see if the company has a good quality history.

If I'm being honest, an S550 Coupe doesn't deserve anything less than the best (see HRE Wheels).

Thanks for everyones input. I agree that the car does deserve a better wheel. Decisions Decisions! Guys shopping for wheels is the equivalent of woman shopping for shoes IMHO lol

i have 21" HRE's on my S63 coupe and i think they look amazing. the ride quality has not suffered at all either. I wouldn't consider putting cheap quality rims on this car. Its a very heavy car and with such a small sidewall your going to want a quality rim.

unless you track, I wouldn't pay too much attention to "quality" of wheels. they all bend, ding, and scratch at some point...

I just bought a 2016 S550 with 22 inch wheels with P Zeros. I was really surprised at how good the ride was even in sport mode. I thought I would have to switch to 20s but I am going to stick with what I have. Here is a picture (apologies for the dealership logo—I just bought it on Thursday and don’t have my own pictures yet).

you dont want to buy a cast wheel, those are normally cheapest quality

For this car, you want forged or at least HLT.
