If you think about it logically, why would they ever stop making an S/CL/SEC flagship coupe???? It’s what they are known for. The reason GM and Ford stopped was because they make to many at a time and have to much supply on hand. MB do more of the’ “ make when needed” approach. When do you really ever see an old Coupe just waiting to sell after a new year model has been introduced? Very seldom if ever and you don’t usually see a lot on their lots at once. They would rather shift stick from already built inventory. They are doing what Lexus has done for years, Keep supply low and demand high. Unlike GM or Ford, who were tying up huge amounts of money in built inventory. Hell, they are still selling 2018 models on sale. We are 4 months into the 2019 sales year.

I think the 850 is a bit much. It’s like putting on to much lipstick just to go buy more lipstick. Plus they don’t offer a 600 Coupe, which to be honest is what I’d really like to buy. Not to sporty but understated elegance with massive power. Plus I personally, ( just my opinion) find the cab in the S versions out of proportion. The E and C do a much better job on their cab’s.

Exactly as I posted above, it will carry into 2022-2023 before a new body change. The cab will also continue since they don’t order parts for these cars until needed. Dye’s and stamps are already made, it doesn’t cost them anything to build special order cars and a few for bigger dealership lots. S Class coupes/CL’s will always be in production, as long as Mercedes is in business.

Note it says: “Daimler will release the next S-Class Coupé in 2023. The S-Class Cabriolet successor will be added in 2024. Both cars will be built on MSA, the same architecture as the future S-Class.”
Just what 2014CL600 said.

Agree. The 6 series didn't compare to the S Class, and neither does the 8 series. Lost opportunity by BMW to compete in this segment. Only real competitor of the S Coupe is the new Bentley CGT. Maybe the DB11 if you don't care about carrying people in the back seat.

I appreciate the 8 series and I'm glad it's back. It will likely do what BMW does well in general. Having not sat in one, it does not appear to compete with the S coupe. It seems to lack the elegance that the S offers.

The S coupe’s interior simply exudes luxury and exquisite fit/finish...I did not get that impression in the 8...and the buttons and switches felt inexpensive lacking the high quailty tactile goodness of my coupes

The LC500 is a really nice car and a viable alternative to the S Coupe at a much lower price. It's performance isn't on the level of the S63 but is probably similar to the S560. And its interior is very good, better than anything else I've seen in the price range. The atmospheric V8 sounds good too. The LC F will be very interesting.

Not sure there are may leftover 2018s out there though, search on Cargurus (which usually shows unsold new inventory) doesn't turn up many at all. Lot of 2019 cars though.

The new S-Class (W222 sedan) probably will be presented in 2020, so production/sale for MY2021? Can imagine Coupe (and let's hope Convertible) will then be there for MY2022?
About the BMW 8 -series: it is just the marketing department that "upgraded" the name from 6 series to 8 series (for obvious reasons). Underneath it is "just" a 5 series Coupe/Convertible, like its pre-decessor 6 series. Just saw a 850i in real life and indeed the interior, etc is more "5 serie plus" than 7 serie quality. Nothing wrong with that, it is a great looking car, will drive good too probably, but better compare it with a Mercedes E Coupe/Convertible, and not a S Coupe/Convertible.

First off, when the S Class sedan changes it will be a W223 not W222 and the coupe will change designations accordingly. Your time line is off but it really doesn’t matter, it will be out when it’s out. I told everyone the timeline, as per Mercedes AG. Either run with it or not. I’m tired of trying to give you facts not hypotheticals.

If there will be a slight difference in timelines between US and EU (my place), I don't know. To call that "new W222" was indeed confusing, as it for sure will have a new number (as will the Coupe and Convertible, but if that will be C218 / A218, I don't know, maybe you know?).
And agree that the large Coupe is there to stay.
Enjoy your day with a smile

Uh.....I don't know, but my post does not contradict your statements about the new Coupe (and Convertible) at all (on the contrary)............those will of course be based on the new S Class architecture (including MBUX, autonomous driving level 3, etc) that will be build in the currently to be constructed new factory hall in SIndelfingen.

Is the article on the MB home page then accurate? Will the s-class coupe and cabriolet "take the exit ramp" in 2019 or 2020?
How do you read the article. Will the coupe and cabriolet be terminated in MY 2019 OR MY 2020? Your thoughts!!

They're certainly not going to throw away all those dies they made for the current A/C217, so it'll soldier on for a few years while they develop its replacement based on the Maybach Vision 6 and a hybrid powertrain.
Just look at the SLK, the Pullman, the Guard, the G Landaulet, the umpteen variants of the GT, even the stupid Smart: they don't mind making low-volume vehicles. Anything needed to provide competition to their German brothers.
