Tossing around the idea of a 450sel 6.9??
Hello all,
My city is bringing back smog checks for all cars built after 1975. So I was thinking of buying a 450sel with the 6.9, and doing some modifications to it. My question is: what year did they start building the 450sel's with the 6.9? And prior to the introduction of the 6.9, what engine did they have?

go talk to www.w116.org folks, they have a few 6.9 owners.
these cars u do need deep pocket to play with them.
They were in America maybe from 75 -79
Plus suck gas like no tomorrow especially if u wanna to drive them fast.
The engine was a direct descendant from the W100 or 600. Many 300sel6.3 should still be around, looked at one in the 80's. The repair bill was 12 grand for the last yr. So i dont think the car was for me then.

W212 E500, W164 320CDI, W116 450SEL 6.9, W116 450 SEL.
I own a 450 and a 450SEL 6.9.
You could potentially put a 6.9 motor into a 450 but it would cost a lot and not be worth much when you are finished.
A good 6.9 is a reliable car but you are looking at a car that is a minimum of 30 years old and is one of the more complicated cars produced in the 1970's.
It is yet to reach real collectible status as the 6.3 has so there are a lot of poorly maintained cars out there where the Mercedes quality has been compromised by weather (read rust) and absence of quality maintenance - particularly of the hydraulic suspension.
It also will not help your pre 1975 emission criteria as the earliest US models were in 1976 although there are a few 1975 cars delivered to other markets.
If you have a genuine interest there are three active web groups

They are interesting cars and are still a reasonable drive. They were the first model with ABS (1978) but this is rarely found being a very expensive option when new.
