Sorry for stupid question but w124 coupe has behind the rear seats. I wonder if w126 500 coupe is the same?
Thank you in advance

I believe the placement of the fuel tank behind the rear seats commenced with the W116. At the very least this point was strongly made in the advertising material when the W116 was first released in 1972. It was placed there for safety to keep the fuel away from being hit and rupturing in a rear-end crash.

I don't think it makes a big difference for the safety aspect of the placement of the tank. Assuming that MB will position the tank behind the seat unless there are to be folding seats, I would think that behind the rear seats are preferred and under the seat is just a compromise.
What I do think makes a difference is the ridgidity of the seat backs. In an accident, any loose objects in the boot will go flying forward and a fixed seat back may have a better chance of stopping that object. All too often I have seen rear seats with folding backs not set in position properly and not providing any protection to the occupants. I also wonder if the fixed seat backs allow a more ridgid car chassis.
My question is on cars without folding rear seats, what is under the seat where the tank would be placed in cars with folding seats? I know on some cars the battery is placed under the seat but this is not the case on older cars like my W116.
