I am looking at buying an older MB diesel, probably a 300.
I am just wondering for some things to lookf out for when considering the vehicles.

Also, are the 240's and 190's alright cars as well?

Thanks for any help and advice.

hmmm I'm not that familiar with the Diesels but from people who i have heard from always say those engines are bullet proof and last forever if they are maint/treated right. I know you have to get the valves ajusted every 15k miles...hmm thats all i know about diesels..make sure it has service records and do a vin check as well.

You could write a book with all the info in the archives.

As with any old MB condition is everything. Also their are many different models and engines avalible. Do a little research and figure out what you like.

Well I would say you really can't go wrong with a Mercedes Benz diesel. I think that they are known the wolrd over for their extreme robustness, relieability, and craftsmenship. I am biased here but I think they set the standard for any diesel car. If you look around they all have really high mileages because they run forever. I have a 1985 300SD and it has been the family forever and it now has 250k. They do have some quirks being diesels though. I would say go with a diesel with a turbo, just all around better car. I recently did a valve job and the thing about these cars is they are simple and easy to work on and now with Ebay parts are on the cheap. The adjustment did help a little with smoothness. Just be prepared to check the oil frequently because they leak. My personal recomandation would be the 300d turbo 80's or the 300sd, both cheap 300 td is a little faster (lighter) and cheaper. But like Hatteresguy said its all about condition, so look at the records. Hope that helps a little.

The real turd to avoid is the 350SDL
Avoid anything with the 3.5L diesel, it is a hogged out 3.0 famous for bent rods and catastrophic failures. Don't be tempted by the extra power it makes versus other old MB diesels.

Also, a friend had an E300 2.5 turbo (5-cylinder, I think) that is on its third motor in 130,000 miles.
