420SEL Upgrades
I recently had the pleasure of acquiring a 1988 Mercedes Benz 420SEL.
Had a few questions, this being my first benz and all. First, how much would it cost to put a nice, fresh black coat of paint on it? What sort of modifications or upgrades would you recommend putting on this old beauty? And finally, is there any advice or tips anyone has regarding this car? Thanks!

hi,
well, I have seen a few estimates for paint jobs anywhere from 3000-5000 for a good one... I think I could recommend is some euro headlamps perhaps..bosch units are 600 or so i think, u can get some DEPOs or TYC from www.katmac.com for 240. I have them on my 300SD.

some people also paint that grey grille insert black to make the chrome stand out better....it looks nice on most w126s i plan on doing it to mine one of these days

A good paint job will be an easy 3-5K as mentioned above. Doing the proper prep work is what takes all the time.
Instead of headlight surrounds save your $$ and get Euro lights. The surrounds will run you close to 200$ and that's getting close to a set of good euro lights (I'm partial to the Bosch, they are very nicely made).
As far as mods you can switch to the 560 dual snorkel intake and remove the resistor by your brake booster (it will have the number 2481 on it..)..
Next step would be exhaust mods..remove the kidney beans, do away w/ the cats..or go to a proper Euro manifold set up...
Hope that helps, feel free to drop a line if you have any other questions or needs!

1988 Benz 420SEL
Thanks for all the help, fellas. I was wondering how much and what should be replaced on the vehicle, since it's at 200,000 miles. What sort of price should a tune-up cost and what should it include for this particular car? And finally, are there are any reliable places to do it in the Ft. Lauderdale area? Thanks!
