Help - I did something really stupid

I was in a hurry, and brain not fully engaged, while changing the battery in my wifes '89 560SEL and didn't notice the posts on the (wrong) replacement battery were reversed. So the car was hooked up with reverse polarity for a brief instant. Sparks told me at the first touch that it was wrong.

Luckily it still starts and runs. The ABS light is on, the Check Engine light seems to be non-functional (possibly burned out bulb) and the car is idling at about 1800 rpm. Otherwise all the systems seem to work.

How do I get diagnostic information from the car so I can figure out what I need to replace?

You probably blew a bunch of fuses and possibly relays. Check the fuses in the box under the hood as well as the OVP relay.

I found out about the Over Voltage Protection (OVP) device on the Shop Forum. Apparently it protected me from myself and all I had to do was replace the 10amp fuse on the OVP. Everything works normally now.

Score one for MB over engineering!
