Hi, I am excited because I might be joining this community soon. I found an 1986 560 SEL. He says its in great condition and runs well too. The only thing it has 225,000 miles on it. He says if he doesn't sell it by tomorrow he'll sell it to me for $1,000. What you guys think? Good deal? Anything I should watch out for? Thanks!

Mercedes
Depends on the condition of the car. But going for a lower price couldn't hurt, try $750. BE PREPARED TO MAKE A LOT OF REPAIRS. If properly maintained, the engines in these cars should last for 500,000 miles, but everything else is going to go wrong. Watch out for costly things such as the transmission. It's a solid car, but it's also 20 years old.

It depends on the conditon, you didn't really give us enough info to judge anything. It could be a nice car or need $4k in defered maintaince.

Check for rust, it should have a stack of maintaince records. The timing chain should have been done at least once. If the heads have not been off it is getting at about that milage, I bet the valve seals and cams are a bit worn.

if the car is in running condition, buy it for a thousand dollars and drive it until the wheels fall off then junk it.

If you are thinking of spending a lot of $$$ to restore it or make it better, then why not spend a little more upfront on the newer car with lower milage?

I remember someone said... "There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes."
