91 420SEL 39k miles - listed in Chicago Tribune

To the W126 crowd... I was combing the Sunday Chicago Tribune today looking for something that would keep my C55 in the garage and came across a listing for a 1991 420SEL with 39k original miles by one owner. Ad claims it's showroom new. Asking price was 14 and change.

If that car is legit that would make a nice creak puff garage queen. The asking price seems fair if it is truely a time warp.

A month or so ago, an '86 or '87 420 SE/SEL with 49K miles was listed on eBay ... bidding went up to $7500 or $7600.

The one you're seeing is a little newer, with a little less miles and perhaps a little better condition (the one on ebay looked to be in very, very good condition) ... not sure if that justifies double the price, though.

Now that I have my own, however, I would love to see W126 prices increase

I would hope he would have some maintenance receipts to document the mileage. If the mileage is accurate I would jump on it.

There's a 560SEL on e-bay now that only has 48k on it - but he wants $15k for it. A little too greedy.

I called this guy. He told me the car was his father in laws... and he had died or was very ill, I can't remember. I asked him how he arrived at the 15K asking price, and he told me that an estate sale guy appraised the car... "and they are always right on the money". I told him that I thought the price was a little on the high side.

Then the guy tells me that he thinks the car is sold anyway. Some guy is flying out from California to look at it Saturday! Didn't bat an eye at the price...

When I called him back on Monday, he told me the car was sold... but something sounded funny to me. So I had my son in law call the guy back a few hours later, and miraculously, the car was once again for sale and available!!!!

I guess he got offended that I questioned the price. But if the guy will lie about that, what else will he lie about?

Hmmmm, thats a bit strange. perhaps he was offended that his father in law was sick/dead and you were haggeling over the price. Strange but you never know some people are like that. Get your son in law to go after it. If the car is mint (according to an independent inspection) and has records etc, then it may be worth going for it. If you do want a lower price don't say "the price is too high" just suggest "would you take 'X' for it?". In my dealings with people they take comments such as teh price being too high as an attack and put up walls.
