Exclamation electrical issues

i drive a 1986 560SEL and it'll start up and run fine for a little while but after a while especially with the headlights on and radio etc. it eventually dies. all the warning lights come on including the gas light and the tachometer starts jumping eraticlly. after it dies if i leave it for a little while it will resatr and do the same thing again. the battery is brand new so it has to be either the voltage regulator or the alternator right? also the alternators i found online are 80amp and the stock one is 70amps is there any problems or retrofitting required in installing it. thanks i appreciate any advice you have because im in college and i can really afford to be trying things that wont get me anywhere, i mean gas prices alone are killing me, but i wouldnt trade my benz for anything in the world

yes it is your alternator! DO NOT GET A NEW alternator... you can replace the brush- It cost about 5 bucks. A new bosch alternator will run you near 600 bucks. Get the brush replace for about 5 bucks. go to benzworld.org and do a search in the w126 section... you will find the part number!
