Question Gas Consumption

I am wondering about the gas comsumption of the 380se for 1984. I found it stated at 18/23 but when i look at the 85 its 16/18. Is this true. If not what is? Is there a difference between the 1984 380se to the 1985 380se

I think it might be more of a typo error than anything else. I have a 84 380sl and I get about 18/23 mpg. I also have a 88 420sel and I get the 16/18 mpg.

Gas mileage is never a strong point for an S-Class of any vintage. The W126 is no exception.

I get 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. With the a/c on the mileage is a couple of mpg less.

It is a luxury car, not an econo-box.

get some high flow cats and intake, that will help get you better mpg. Also make sure your o2s are good, and a fuel system cleaner would not hurt. Might also want to check air filter.

I had the 2 resonators removed and thought about a high flow cat. However I think the headers are the most restrictive and should be replaced first. The intake is very good already and I do not want to mess with it.

I tried a K & N filter without noticeable difference. I also tried Platinum 4 spark plugs.

The car is like a big rear drive Chevy of years past. Very comfortable and easy to maintain. All it takes is money and tender loving care.

a better designed exhaust system and intake will improve mpg, might want to check the mas to see if its on its way out. You could also try removing excess items from your car. If you have a lot of junk in there. Try the first gear start mod, that will also help get better mpg
