My son has access to a "free" '88 560SEL with ~150K miles. Reportedly it's only problem is that it runs through (drains) batteries very quickly. Are there any obvious or common problems that could cause this problem? Any other major warning signs to watch out for?

Voltage regulator - located on the back of the altenator.Common problem with the W126. Less than $100.00 repair.

Check the sunvisors to make sure they are not creating a short. Basically, figure out whether it is a battery draining problem or a lack of charging problem.
