What is a mid-80's 300sdl worth.....w/ 400K miles?

A friend of mine is selling his old mercedes, and he has offered it to me for about $1200. My question is it worth it? I know these things are supposed to last forever but what is forever really? I believe it is an 84, its a 300SDL black on tan, body and paint is pretty decent and it runs well although it has about 420k miles. The A/C has a leak, but everything else works fine.

Every site like NADA, or KBB all give me figures that I know cant be right. NADA said it was worth $4500. Thanks for any input.

Even a Mercedes diesel is not going to last forever. If you go in with that state of mind then you will be very happy. What car can you buy with $1,200? MB will not repair your Freon system and will try to sell you a R134a one for maybe $1,200, the price of your car. This car was the top of the line MB just like the new S-Klasse and you better be prepared to pay to keep it in good working order. There is nothing sadder to see a W126 rot to death in front of your eyes.

How much you want to pay is up to you. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I traded in my 1986 SEL for a song.

I actually spend most of my time in Mexico and freon is still very much in use, so I am hoping for them to just repair it. I realize that no car lasts forever, before this I had a volvo 240 with 286k miles, I sold it but it is still on the road. But I imagine it will soon die. I was just wondering how long I might expect it to last? 50K, 100K?? I realize that depends on driving habits, but I was just curious what others have gotten out of these cars?

Thanks,
Ben

1200 seems high, but...

1200 seems high but there are other factors, like what works and what doesnt, does it drive ok, at that mileage alot of things are gonna need replacing if it hasnt been done already.

Suspension bushings, steering box, ball joints,

I paid 1000 CAD for a 87 SDL with 614k km on it, I never intended to put that back on the road, i am using it as a parts car, it did not drive well, but it did still drive.

impossibly to tell how long the engine will last, could go for 200K more, at 420K, you are probably one of the highest mileage SDLs out there.
