electric odo/speedo mechanics - 1988 300 SEL

Hi everyone,

Firstly I have done a ton of research online.

The odometer (and trip) in my '88 300SEL has stopped working, however the speedo works fine. Does the odometer function as a slave to the speedometer i.e. the single electronic speedo input runs both mechanisms and is there just one gearbox sender unit for the gauges?

I can't pinpoint the moment it stopped working but I think it was when I was driving down the motoway and my transmission leaked a burst of fluid onto the exhaust (I only noticed when I looked in my rearview mirror to see clouds of smoke. I pulled over to find transmission fluid over the bottom of the car. Anyway the transmission has all but stopped the fluid leak and seems to have a normal fluid level. What do you think would cause an this to occur and could it have affected the odometer with out affecting the speedo?

Regards,

Quite a few:)
FYI, that's a mechanical speedo on DG's site..different from what is being discussed here.

However, there is a small set of gears which often strip with age in the later clusters. I believe they are available for order from some of the cluster repair shops.

I used to have the link but @ the moment can't find it :-/

You can always send them out for repair as well.
