A/C problems - Worse Case Senario - COST?

If the a/c isn't working on a 1990 560 SEC, in a worse case senario, what would it be and what would repairs cost? Not looking for a small electrical problem or low on Freon, but rather when something expensive has gone bad...

Thank you!

The costs depend very much on whether you are a tree hugger Naderite or a sensible American.

If you are Naderite you are screwed. Big dollars are needed for a new R134a system and the relative inefficiency. There is nothing to replace the good old Freon system.

If you are sane and sensible you are in luck. Know the guy who services your home AC? Give him cash and get him to pump your system with the good old stuff. Better still. There are guys who can refill your system for less.

There is nothing better than the ozone gases or whatever Al Sore calls global cooling or warming (farts?) gases. If he stops preaching there would be less hot air to add to his imaginary global warning.

I think it would help if you added some context to the question. Are you looking at an W126/SEC and wondering how much the purchase price should be reduced due to a non-working A/C?

If that is the question, check out the "Buyer's Guide" at either the MercedesShop or MBcoupes websites. If I recall correctly, they said to deduct $2,000 off the asking price for a non-working A/C on an SEC.

If you look at list prices for different parts of the A/C system, you will realize it could be more ... so my guess for a worst-case scenario is $3-4K

Cost me $3500

New compressor
New Cabin controls
New Relays
New Dryer
New Freon... did not convert to R134 because it does not cool as well and the price per pound was about the same.
Lots of Labor

One year later had to replace High Pressure Fan switch for about $175.

Now I am looking at the cooler element in the cabin for $2700 (quote).

I am looking at the same exact problem with a totally non-op AC and heat going on in a 1991 SEC.

(Gulp).

It was last serviced about 6 years ago or so, still with R12. It worked to a week ago, I will check the fuse first, then if that doesn't do it, BOHICA
