I know these cars are not exactly classics given the number of them around. However, is an SEC more valuable from a resale point of view. Does a sunroof or any other feature (i.e., 5.0 versus 5.6) figure into this?

Mileage is certainly important but outside of this, what matters when judging the value and ultimate potential for classic car status of these cars?

The coupes are always worth more than sedans. Value is strictly condition, history, and what the Buyer is willing to spend. If chasing a w126 that would have collector car status, it'd have to be low-mileaged, well-documented, near-perfect condition, very stock car, or the same with an AMG package so the performance is there. Look at the muscle cars - manual trannys, largest engine, matching numbers, original condition, and low miles always bring the biggest bucks. Sedans, 6-cyl engines, low options, and "drivers" don't equate.

An SEC will be a more desirable car in the future. 60k cars total production world wide over 10-11 years. These cars are also lower mileage than the sedans, since these were not family cars, but a personal coupe. It does have a back seat, although I find it best for my coat vs. people.
The 380/500/560 coupes are an exceptional value on the market.
If I were looking it would be a 91 either sedan or coupe. Last year almost everything was included. Some options were the rear sunshade, ASR, and body packages.

The coupe and the sedan are the same cars, yet totally different than each other. Differences found comparing the 2 after driving them were astonishing to me.

I agree with low mileage cars, AS LONG AS MAINTAINED. Any 20 year old unmaintained car is just that a "20 year old ..." . Figure most people that are original owners are in there mid to late ok early 70's. These guys generally don't beat a car. Take a look on mbcoupes.com for a buyers list.
