Question Transmission, reverse failure

Help, loosing reverse gear on my W126, 1989 500SE Automatic, works OK when cold, all forward gears OK, feels like the drive is slipping in reverse, makes a whirring noise on accelerating, but little or no movement, any ideas out there, sounds expensive ?.

Quite a few:)
Yes, it will be...ie, you'll be taking the transmission out and having it re-built.

New filters do wonders. Around $30 for the kit. About reverse, sound like the clutch pack or reverse piston is leaking. either way, it is and R&R. You can rebuild it yourself, I did 3 of mine! Cost was $325 in parts and 4 days of time. But, you need mucho hand tools and possibly access to a press or at least have a large bench vise and an engine stand to hold it. Also, a very clean work area and a digital camera, or a memory like Kreskin.

Sounds expensive but send 300SDTURBOS PM to see what he is going to do with two of his cars and explore if you can buy a transmission from him.
