Tranny Shifting issues..this one is a little different

hey guys

Well i got an 85 SD with approx 207K on it. Iv always had this transmission problem where when I come to a stop, and it shifts down in gears for (3 to 2 I assume since it skips gear 1) there is a load clank that occurs. It feels like it is coming from the rear of the car, not so much the front. Otherwise the tranny seems to work fine

This is where it gets interesting. this only happens if the tranny is in th "D" position. If i place it in "3", this does not happen. The part that makes this even more complicated is last month I had a heater issue where it wouldnt turn off and would blow 24/7. Anyway, I got desperate and tried to pull a fuse. I pulled I think the #10 fuse with the description "Electronic transmission control" or something to that effect because it also controlled an aspect of the heater. It didnt help the heater, but it really helped the trannny.

When the fuse was removed the clank noise went away even in "D". To my pleasure the transmission began shifting much smoother and quieter, no more "shift shock". The only reason I have not left the fuse out is because with it out, the heater keeps blowing ( i had the prior issue fixed).

I have no idea what this could possibly be. I have taken it to a few transmission shops and none of them could tell me without taking the darn thing apart. I have had the car for a few years and it has always done that. I had gotten use to it but after i saw how life is with a smooth tranny, I want one!! lol. If anybody has experienced this or knows what the problem/remedy is, please do share.

So far I have only changed the fluid
