Dead transmission

I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot a 300SDL transmission that went from perfectly fine, to not shifting past 2, to not going in gear at all. This happened all in the matter of weeks, so it makes me wonder if the transmission is actually done or it's something else. Is there anything I can look for by taking off the center console into the shifter? Would this be helpful? I checked the vacuum line running to the transmission and it held vacuum fine.

Did you check the shifter bushings on the exterior of the trans? They can be checked easily by looking at them.
