until 1985, the 126 had a OM607A engine. This was a turbocharged I5 3 liter. 120-125 hp, 170-180 lb-ft torque.

1986-1987 OM617A I6 3 liter diesel 148hp approx 200 lb-ft

1990-1991 OM617.95 I6 3,5 liter diesel. about 135 hp about 230 lb-ft

1996 W124 E320 Coupé, 1990 W124 300E twin turbo, 1991 W126 300 SE, 1984 Ford Capri 2.8i
The October 1993 edition of MB's Technical data passenger cars has the 603.970 engine listed against the 350 SD and 350 SDL. Curiously, this isn't listed in its engine-data section; the 603.960/963 shows 147 bhp at 4600 rpm and 273 Nm torque at 2400 rpm.

I now see from here:

http://www.mercedesdiesels.com/300d.html

that those details relate to post-1985 models.

To the contrary, the 300SD is supposed to be a lot more reliable than the 350SDL
