'83 300sd electrical problem

We have an '83 300sd that will not hold its battery charge at all, even after jumping it. We have done the following: a) checked battery - good; b) changed the alternator; c) checked all wiring connections - good. We think it might be a wiring short somewhere but we're not sure where to look. Can someone guide me as to what to check first, second, etc. Your help is greatly appreciated, believe me! Thank you, thank you.

FYI, here are some issues that we've been recently dealing with should it might have a relationship to this electical problem: Our tachometer started to bounce around and now it only works sporadically; our speedometer started to work only between 40 & 50 mph, now it only works sporadically. The brake & brakepad indicator lights will not go out.

Have you checked for a drain at each of the terminals in the fuse box?
