Cool window problems/Odometer not moving

Hello guys-- i need some help -- i just bought a 1988 420SEL , and both driverside windows are not working and sunroof also does not move at all it doesn't seem to respond to switch maybe the fuse is out?? - i took off the rear door panel and it looks like the previous owners knew there was a problem and were using a piece of wood to keep window up - i seem to think it's the regulator since the window does not stay up! any advice? also there are 2 connectors at the bottom that are not connected to anything ---????? ---- I also didn't notice till after i bought it that the odemeter does not seem to work the speed and all other gauges are fine but it's not keeping track of mileage --- ?????? again any advice on how ti get working ... i can probably do it myself ... Thx guys!

Regulators will need to be replaced. I did them in my 420. I think I got mine used on eBay.

Get a PDF download of the car service manual, it will help. You should be able to find one online for about $10.

The sunroof has a manually operated device in the trunk to see if it opens or is seized. If it opens, then possibly the motor or fuse. The fuses in these cars may look good, but are bad, so you have to change them out to be sure.

When changing the fuses out best to use the copper ones vs. the aluminum fuses.

90% sure that is fuse. The other 10% could be including but not limited to broken switches or bad relays. Keep us posted on what do U find...

Cool

well $400 later, the front driver's side window needed a new regulator, the rear driver side window needed just a small square plastic that apparently breaks alot on these cars replaced but it still costed me $135 in labor. We were not able to determine the sunroof issue since it is closed and not a priorty after a $400 bill , you know!

But my mechanic said its a good buy! Says it needs R12 freon ... does anyone know where i can buy some for Cheap? I don't feel like spending another 300-$400 to convert to R134 .... please let me know guys! Thx

One thing R-12 isn't is cheap! R134 doesn't work well in the 126's.

I know I buy it when I can find it.

u can convert it to 134 if u want i have heard 2 different sides to the cooling of r12 and 134 as i have been told it depends on how its done and what compressor you use. The odometer just needs a new gear if you take the gage cluster out and take the speedometer you will notice on the right side(if you are looking at the front)at the back one of the gears are broke and need to be replaced also as for the sunroof the motor could be bad but like every body has stated check the fuse as to it can be bad and the switch

I had the same window issue with my 300SD. That small plastic piece cost me $4.20. But, yes is was a pain to install, even after removing th regulator.
I also have the same issue with the odometer. It started after I filled the car with fuel and tried to reset the trip odometer. After that the main and the trip odometer stopped working. I'm guessing the problem is in that knob assembly, but I haven't looked at it as yet.

perfect solution to the small plastic piece is to find something metal and drill out the rivet and use a small nut and bolt .. funny thing is i found a old piece of flat window rod that i cut and used a small bolt and nut .. put some grease back in and your good to go ... did that on both my back windows .. those plastic pieces are junk and i wouldnt waste the time replacing it with another plastic piece ..
