Exclamation 1990 300SEL electrical issue

Hello Gents

New member
Just bought a 1990 300SEL in mint condition with only 70k miles for my daughter. I have decided to keep it for my self as it is too nice for her. Dont worry she can drive my old Saab.

It keeps blowing the fuse that controls the door locking system, front interior light and the automatic antenna. Is is a 8 amp fuse Does anybody have any knowledgle of a common fault that causes this? Wiring to air pump under rear seat, wire to door switch, etc. I removed the automatic antenna as it was jammed when I bought the car, thinking that was putting a load on the fuse.It didnt help. Any ideas????

Thanks for the great info on this forum.

Does it burn out instantly or does it take a bit?

It takes a bit to burn out the fuse. Everthing works for a few days, then it burns out. The last fuse burned out pretty quick,so I am pretty sure it is a progressive problem. Thanks for the help!

Quick trick

Replace all the aluminum fuse with copper ones.

Clean the copper holders with a emory cloth and install all new copper fuses of the correct amp size.

Electrical problems on 126's are not to common.

I had a similar electrical problem on an Audi. A window motor fuse would burn out at irregular intervals months apart. Turned out to be a power wire inside the passenger door. It touched the inside surface of the door at one point. Over time, there was enough movement that it had rubbed off door paint & wire insulation but didn't always touch. At some point in daily driving, the bare wire would touch the door & short out the fuse. Only found it by accident. If you trace your wires, you may find something like this. The wire will have continuity unless the bare part is touching metal. Good luck! Don

I agree. I dont have any electrical issues on my W126 (1988) nor my old W126 (1985), NOR my '84 190D. Before I ever owned a Mercedes, I was hesitant, because I had heard of alot of electrical issues with some of them, but I have never had any issues with them. (So far anyway).

Disable the antenna connections in the boot and try a new fuse..if it still blows remove the front lamp and try again...the door lock will be the culprit if the fuse blows..or else the wiring to the three items is compromised..best of luck...
