Engine oil - cold weather

I am currently running 10w-40 in my 420 SEL as per the owner's manual, which says that it's a good year-around oil. However, for near and below freezing temperatures, would you gentlemen recommend any different type?

I'm actually getting near that now, and winters here will bring temperatures often below fifteen degrees F. I'm probably not going to run synthetic in this because I've found that switching to synthetic in an older vehicle often results in leaks.

Im using Kendall 10-40w synthetic blend because it was in the engine when I bought benz 2 months ago. Seems like a good "best of both worlds" solution, no leaks.
It's hard to find Kendall, so when I change the oil I'll go to a different blend. A knowledgable guy at NAPA told me that synthetic blend oil is not the same as mixing natural with synthetic, it's a special base oil- not the same thing.
I don't think I'll go to full synthetic until I find the right one.

I switched to synthetic in my car when I purchased it with 171k on the clock. No leakage problems.I did change over gradually...1/2 synthetic and 1/2 normal for a few changes before going 100% synthetic.
