1988 & 89 300SE (W126)
I was just quoted US$400.00 (labor) plus parts and the cost to machine the head to do a head rebuild. As for a complete engine rebuild, I'm not sure. I got lucky and found an experienced MB mechanic that only charges $30.00 an hour.

Worth the drive-
What city is this mechanic in, seriously, I would drive to this mechanic if thier shop wasnt too far away, but then I guess the waiting list is a year long, they are booked solid until 2011?
