Occasional Battery Light

Car: 1988 420SEL
142,000 miles

When driving, the battery light occasionally - but so dim that you can only barely see it when driving at night. However, if you brake really hard, the battery light will come on brightly but then dim again once the car stops. Sometimes, however, the battery light is not on at all.

What's up with that? I haven't looked at the battery itself yet - do these typically have ones where you can add electrolyte?

More notes:
Battery light will glow very dim, occasionally. If it's not on, turning on the high beams will be accompanied by the very dim, only visible at night, battery light. Under hard braking, like panic stop braking, the battery light will glow bright. When at it's brightest, all of the other dash indicator lights will flicker for an instant.

Problem solved. Bad alternator, it just went kaput today. I kind of figured that was the problem. Thankfully it gave out today instead of this weekend when I was going to be taking it on a 300 mile trip!
