1991 420 SEL
Just bought a 420 SEL...now what?

Just purchased a very (ok, mostly) nice 1991 420 SEL - 2 owners, total of 253k miles on it. This will be a daily driver and long-term investment. So far things that need to be addressed are:
1) Where's the heat? Engine only gets up to about 50 celsius
2) Really, really stiff acelerator pedal
3) At idle (like at a red light) the car vibrates to the point of being a massage. May not fix this. :-)

Really excited to own this car and getting many miles out of it.

Sell it. It will bleed you dry. My experience with MB is that unless you can do every single repair yourself and you are a master mechanic, you are going to spend an incredible amount of money keeping it going.

hmm....vibration seems to me like it's probably in need of new engine mounts........
....the temp issue could be many things...i know I have an issue with temperature in my 400e as well....but I'm not worried...I'd rather have it a little cool than a little warmer than it should be.....could be the thermostat....could be the radiator cap......
As for the accelerator pedal, not sure.......could it be that you're just not used to driving such a heavy car?.....I do notice that Mercedes pedals seem to take so much more effort than other cars.

relaxing vibrations!!!!

hello! i second cking the motor mounts. with the mileage i would also look at the diff and trans mounts also. i dont agree with getting rid of it. anything that age and older is in need of some much deserved tlc. not cheap but well worth it. try to do what u can urself to keep cost down and learn about the proud car uve chosen to be seen in. lolol its fun and hair pulling at the same time.

just bought 1987 300sdl turbo last week. talked to mercedes shop that kept the car up. asked him why my temp ran so low about 50c. he told me on my car that some pepole like to run a cooler thermostat in the summer and a hotter one in the winter. may not be the same for gas eng.
don't let anyone tell you that your car cost to much to keep up!!! check the net for parts. no more mabe less than most american cars. try to get a ford or chev fixed and you will apreceat your highend luxury car
