it claims to have 66K miles auto check checked out other than it was first reported to the DMV in 2001 with 47K miles.
Its real clean

W212 E500, W164 320CDI, W116 450SEL 6.9, W116 450 SEL.
Mileage must be treated as suspect if there is any valve noise at that mileage.

Immediate thoughts would be
1) Timing chain stretch and state of chain tensioner
2) Camshaft wear through high mileage or poor maintenance
3) Hydraulic lifter(s) sticking through lack of use or poor maintenance.
4) Failed plastic cam oilers

I would like to see the cam covers come off and preferably being checked by someone in the M-B business.

It changes all the time
It is probably a lifter that has gone south. Although it is not common lifters do fail in the 116 117 engines. WGB gives sound advice. Have the valve train check out by a professional. By the way the lifters don't make noise. The clattering sound that you hear is caused by the valve slamming shut. Good luck.
