1985 500SEL AMG
Need some advise...

Hey guys,

New to this form but looking for some help. I have an 85 500SEL AMG that is in good shape. Its Blue on Tan. Just Under 90k and runs pretty darn good. Its got H&R Cup Kit on it as well as newer brakes and tires.

The car is perfect except for a few issues...

- The interior is mint except for a couple worn panels
- Sunroof doesnt open
- Cluster started to break so I replaced it with another that shows 180k miles but have the documents to prove the miles.
- The AMG badge fell off but still have it
- Paint is from 1985, theres no peeling or anything, just aged.
- Seems like the fuel filter or something might be blocked because it has hesitations from the start sometimes but once u get going it rocks.

I am in the position where I need to sell the car. I never wanted to because it has kind of a cool story. My father owned this car in 87 when I was a kid in the back seat and I found it and Vin Matched it. Its the same exact car! I have no idea what this thing is worth, I probably have about 12k invested in it. Anyone have an Idea of what this car would go for or anyone thats interested? Thanks in advance.

Value for your car will depend on two major things, and then one minor thing.

First, is it a real AMG? And by that I mean - does the car have AMG documentation? What did AMG do to it - just a body kit? Suspension mods? Engine mods? Second is condition - is the paint just okay, or will it clean up very well? Any rust issues?

Your biggest pitfall is the 180,000 odometer put into a 90,000 mile car. NO ONE will believe that story, and if you try to sell it like that, you'll get bottom dollar. Why would you replace the cluster when the original one can be fixed and documented that way?

My advice: clean up the car the best you can, fix the "hesitations" so that the car runs like a top, fix the original odometer and get it back in there, see if you can document the AMG side of things, and then ebay it.

As you describe it, it's a sub-$5000 car.

hesitations are a great big red flag. It could be a bottomless pit of problems. Things work good under full accel since the fuel injection is basically bypassed under those conditions (WOT pressure switch). You get the right buyer, who knows, but it is what it is. I would not put a dime in it, straight to craigs or ebay. Document what you can.
