Trap Oxidizer on a 1987

I just purchased a 1987 300SDL that still had the trap Oxidizer. I took it to the local dealer to have the trap removed under the service campaign. Everything was going great, even got a new 300 as a loaner. Now the bad. when they tried to install the new Cat on the old exhaust they couldn't because the exhaust doesn't have the necessary flanges because Mercedes didn't think to engineer in cat flanges for their future service campaign. They refused to modify my working exhaust and insisted that I pay for a new muffler and tail pipe to accommodate the new Cat. To make a long story short MB corporate say that they reserve the right to deny on a case by case basis as this is a voluntary campaign. Basically since the car has not been into the dealer since 1992 and then only had a coolant flush they were not going to give me the exhaust too and that I had to pay $1000 for a muffler and tailpipe. Had it been in for regular service they would have covered it. That was all out of my control as it was sitting in a garage somewhere for years. It has 175000 miles.

Any opinions? Should I ne happy they changed the trap oxidizer on a 1987 free or should I be mad they made me pay for half and buy a genuine Mercedes muffler and tailpipe for $1000? I am torn between happy and pissed.

It runs a lot better with the trap oxidizer removed
