560SEL Rear Wheel Bearing
I started the job of replacing one of my rear wheel bearings on my 90' 560SEL. I am attempting to pull the half shaft from the passenger side rear hub but don't seem to have the clearance to pull the shaft out of the hub. Does anyone know if the hydraulic suspension ram must be loosened to get the extra clearance? The trailing arm is not quite to the stop but there is only about 1/4 inch of space on the stop. Or do I need to remove the entire half shaft from the differential with the special torx bolts? Or is there a trick that I haven't figured out yet?
The service manual just mentions removing the bolt and sliding it out. Too bad that doesn't work.

I started early to remove the back seat to get to the top hydraulic ram mount. After loosening the ram and letting it down to the stop I found that I still didn't have enough slack in the shaft to remove it. I used a jack under the differential to try to move it up. Better but still not enough room. With the jack in place under the differential I ground out a notch in the locking ring and was able to level the shaft out.
Has anyone had this much trouble? None of this is mentioned in the service manual.
Hopefully re-assembly goes smoother.
