91 560 SEL Headlights seem dim

Hello.....I have had this awesome car (128k miles now) for a year. Bought it with 116k miles. I always felt that the headlights are dim but when my son commented on this, I have considered changing them. Is there a replacement light kit out there? When I drive by cars at night, everyone's lights have better frontal and lateral coverage.

I see these headlight on ebay in the $200 range.

Any thoughts on this or should I look for OEM headlights?

Thanks

John

Any new headlamp fixture can improve vision.

Id say find some euro headlights and throw some HID conversion kits on it.

You will blind the crap out of everyone on the road with HIDs. without projectors for the HIDs the light will scatter and BLIND EVERYONE ON THE ROAD!

if you can find a way to fit 9004 lights in the OEM headlamp fixtures then you will see a vast improvement.

I always prefer factory headlights over any aftermarket solution. Typically they provide adequate light, and last a long time.

But before you get started, it's a good idea to check and figure out why your car has dim lights. Typically it's one of these things:
  • Headlight lens is oxidized, blocking the light from passing through
  • Headlight bulbs are worn
  • Contacts between the headlight bulb and the wiring is corroded
  • Ground wire from the headlight is disconnected
  • Wires going to the headlights are not getting full voltage

More than likely you have an issue of oxidized lenses, and corroded contacts. To fix this, I would recommended replacing the lenses, installing new bulbs, and cleaning the contacts on the light bulb plug.

We have most of these parts in stock:

1991 Mercedes Benz 560SEL Headlight Lens
from Oscaro

1991 Mercedes Benz 560SEL Headlight Bulb from Oscaro

As far as which lightbulb to go with: for a stock replacement: the OSRAM Headlight Bulb provides great service life combined with an affordable price, and better-than-stock light output.

For better than stock performance: We carry the the 80/90w HB1 Hella Headlight Bulb. This bulb has a higher-than-stock output, while still remaining within the limits of the stock wiring.

caution: if you test the wiring harness and it is not putting out full voltage, do not install higher wattage light bulbs. The increased load can be too much for your system.

Its just the lenses. Which is fine, I figured they would be the entire unit. That works as a cost friendly option. In my own opinion the entire unit would be a better find, if you like to keep everything MB as I do.

The lenses look cloudy. Im sure its just the photo but still it kind of throws me off looking at them.
