My old 1981 Toyota Cressida would do this. We liked to have never found the problem. Finally took to the Toyota dealership. They traced it down to a bad relay in the fuse box that controls the lights. Mercedes probably has different things controlling the warning lights, but this was the problem on my old car. Good luck.

Did the gauges fail when this happened?

A few years ago I had a similar problem. The gauges failed (except the speedo as it's cable-operated) because the fuse contacts were corroded. However I don't remember the warning lamps coming on.

Whatever you do please don't take your Benz to a gas station! They'll hack it up!!!! There has to be a dealership or indie MB shop somewhere!
