ABS fault...

I was driving my aunt`s 560SEC today and noticed it didn`t have ABS. When I started the car, I noticed it the ABS light didn`t come on. I hit the brakes hard when going slow on a wet surface and the car skided. Do you know what`s wrongÉ
P.S. And for such a big car, it should have ASR.

The ABS lamp is supposed to come on when the key is in the run position, and go out after the engine has started. If the lamp doesn't come on, it is most likely burned out. You have to remove the instrument cluster to replace it. After that if the light stays on after the engine starts, there is an ABS fault. Sometimes it can be caused by something as simple as low voltage. Otherwise, take it to an MB shop and have them test it. There are special tools for diagnosing ABS faults.

Well I think the ABS lamp is burned out as well as the right instrument cluster light. How much do you think MB will ask if I get my aunt or me to get it fixed. Anyways, there is NO ABS. When I was backing up, I hit the brakes hard and the tires skidded.

You might be charged from 1-2 hours for labor to remove the cluster, replace the lamps, and reinstall the cluster. An indie shop charges about $65-75/hr. The stealer could get around $90/hr.

Are you sure? I know my LS400 and the SL500 also skid when i push the brakes hard on the driveway and will slide for five to ten feet.

The driveway is naturally slippery however AND it was wet.

When you back up vraa, is it a smooth or bumpy skidÉ When I brake hard in both directions, it`s a bumpy skid. The only time I get a smooth spin is when I accelerate forward hard. When I accelerate in reverse hard, I get a bumpy skid. When you respond, the I should be able to figure out if ABS is working.

Mine has gone bad about a year ago, replaced it with a unit from a 89 wrecked but the ABS unit was still in good condition and had less miles on than my bad one. $600 plus 1 hour labor from an indy MB merchanic.

Yeah, me too! But....after 18 years and 14 of those were in So CA stop and go traffic most of the time, and nearly 100,000 miles on it, it just quited. Oh well, nothing last forever if you used it.

Question

Ok, I got to test the car again on wet pavement. The ABS works occasionally. It`s like it goes on and off. I go back and forth and brake hard and the wheels have minimal skid. I do it again later and the wheels just lock up. Anybody know what`s going onÉ
