Looking to buy this 1986 560SEL
So I found a 560SEL not too far from me (NE Ohio), and this would be my first W126. Asking price is $4000. The photos look extremely clean, and the ad says the car has 81,000 miles. If the car is as advertised, it is definitely worth the $4000 in my opinion. Here's where things get complicated. Again, I was told that the car has 81000 miles. I was also told that the car has had 3 owners. I paid for an Autocheck Report, and it states that the car has 87,000 miles and 5 owners. It has 20 events listed, with mileage going from 22,423 in February of 1997 to 53,000 in January of 1998. After that it has a steady increase to 60,000 miles in March of 2001. Then it jumps to 81,000 miles in October of 2004. After that, there's basically a 10 year gap where it last recorded 87,000 in May of 2014.
But then the carfax states that this car has 102,000 miles. The owner is a very old man who lives in a very wealthy part of town. All the records show that the car has never left the state. Is it sketchy for a car like this to have such differing mileage on Carfax and Autocheck?
I'm going to see the car tomorrow and get more information. Regardless, if the car looks as clean as it does, and mechanically seems to be good, would the car be worth buying at this price? Is it possible that somehow these websites just screwed up all of this information?
