My 82 300SD center console has what looks to be a standard set up (shifter, window switches, mirror control...) but the wood form and the gear shifter base just don't line up by maybe 3/8th"). Does anyone know why or if there's a way to move the shifter? Is there a different wood cover out there?

Worn shifter bushings perhaps? Is there much play in the gear lever?
